Environmental Activities

1 Company 1 Stream Campaign
PolyMirae has been participating in the 1 Company 1 Stream campaign as a social contribution activity to protect the environment in the community. We have been cleaning a stream located near the company and will continue to participate in the campaign.
Clean Water Day Event
Yeosu city, which is hosting the 2012 Yeosu Expo, has been actively participating in cleaning the center of the city through the Clean Water Day events. Yeosu city is also striving to realize the theme of the expo "The Living Ocean and Coast". PolyMirae has been participating in cleaning the Soho-dong area for the successful opening of the expo.
Green camp event
Global warming has become a serious problem for mankind. PolyMirae therefore holds events for employees' children during the summer vacation to recognize its causes and results, and to teach them how to save energy.
In 2008, an event was held with the theme "Green Camp" to inspire the children's interest in the preservation of the environment and in energy. In 2009, children participated in an event with the theme "Kids 119" and we introduced them to PolyMirae's thorough and perfect fire facilities and showed them a video for fire drills. Afterwards, they visited the Yeosu fire station, experienced a variety of fire equipment and facilities, and received education.
Voluntary Agreement (VA)
1. Voluntary agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to cope with climate change PolyMirae, along with Yeosu city, has been actively participating in the protection of the global environment and the improvement of air quality. PolyMirae is striving to protect the earth and achieve a Green Environment by signing the "voluntary agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to cope with climate change" in order to comply with the environmentally friendly 2012 Yeosu Expo.

2. RC (Responsible Care) Activity
PolyMirae has been voluntarily participating in RC activities in order to fulfill its social responsibility for the chemical industry. We have been systematically managing all the chemicals that are used and manufactured in the plant. Through this systematic management, PolyMirae prevents accidents and environmental pollution, and also secures the health and safety of employees and people in the community, as well as maintaining pleasant environmental surroundings. This activity was introduced in 2004 and we are aiming at minimizing the effects on the environment by preventing and managing the environment in areas such as air, water, disposal and soil, and through improvement activities for health and safety.
What is RC?
Caring for the protection of environment and human health throughout the entire process of the chemical industry from the development stage of chemical products to its manufacturing, sales, distribution and use, eventually to its disposal. Making this a commitment in the management policy and exercising voluntary initiatives which continuously work on safety, environment and health improvement activities. It is a global campaign with initiatives by companies who cherish and care for the chemical industry which intends to help the chemical industry uplift its public perception and further restore trust through implementation of Responsible Care.
RC's Beginning…
With the purpose of preventing accidents in the chemical industry, it was begun in 1985 by the Canadian Chemical Industries Association. RC came into being in 1999 in Korea. With the founding of KRCC (Korea RC Council) in December, Korea has become the 46th member nation on September 2002 and PolyMirae has become an active KRCC member since July 2003.

Responsible Care

Activities Code
RC code is made up of the following 7 codes below
  • 1. Community Awareness & Emergency Response
  • 2. Process Safety
  • 3. Employee Health & Safety
  • 4. Pollution Prevention
  • 5. Distribution
  • 6. Product Stewardship
  • 7. Security
  • PolyMirae is managed and run by using the 6 codes not including the 7th code, 'Security'
1. Community Awareness & Emergency Response Its purpose lies in securing emergency response readiness to protect the employees and neighbors and to protect the right to know by the community. Further it requires disclosure of information and open talks with the community. We're doing our best in order to realize this through risk assessment and by preparing emergency response plans and by exchanging information with relevant training organizations and personnel.

2. Process Safety We're protecting our employees, wealth and the environment by preventing fire, explosion and leakage incidents at chemical companies. Furthermore in order to build trust on the safety of chemical plants from all interested parties including government and neighbors, PolyMirae is documenting process safety related information, identifying and eliminating causes of accidents, observing regulations and carrying out safety management of our employees and partner companies in order to realize this.

3. Employee Health & Safety It has been designed for the purpose of protecting and improving safety and health of our employees working on site and those of partner companies entering the site. For its implementation, safety related information and education are provided to users, legal requests are performed and assessments are conducted. At the same time regular health check-ups and improvement measures are being carried out - e.g. inspection on the proper wearing of safety equipment and personal protection kits.

4. Pollution Prevention Protecting the employees and the environment by reducing the quantity of pollutants being discharged into the atmosphere, water and earth from the facility and by reducing waste matter and promoting awareness on environment , safety and health by all interested parties including neighbors. For its realization, a corporate environmental policy to reduce pollution has been established, working plan to reduce pollutants and waste matters has been drafted, life management studies as well as impact analysis of pollutants and waste materials are being carried out.

5. Distribution The purpose lies in reducing risk during the distribution process which may be harmful to the carrier, distributor, and chemical industry workers as well as to general public and environment. For its implementation, we carry out risk assessment of dangerous articles to be transported, take measures to reduce risk, prepare accident response plans during distribution and accident reporting structures as well as training for the employees.

6. Product Stewardship & quality control The goal lies in preserving safety, health and environment throughout the entire process from the product's development stage to its manufacturing, sale, distribution, consumption, recycling and eventual disposal. In order to realize this, we're managing the entire process and forecasting and improving prospective issues in quality. This is followed by distributor and supplier management, product risk assessment and information sharing management.

Activities Code
After becoming a member in July 2003, PolyMirae achieved speedy implementation owing to the efforts of a well organized team and all staff members doing their very best for a prompt arrival to the final stage 6, RI (Re-assessing: Assessment criteria were met by the company following completion of the working plan implementation and practicing the activities for more than a year), which is the last goal of the management code made up of 6 codes. Moreover with RC introduction, by preparing sign boards as a pledge to its thorough implementation by all our employees, RC implementation has become part of our daily life and we are doing our very best for its continued implementation including the below.

Systematic management of safety, environment and health using the integrated management system SEQMS-31001.

Prepared checklist shall be used for self-inspection once every year by an internal inspection team to monitor its implementation as well as oversee improvement areas.

Every two years an external inspection team will check its implementation and improvements and every three years family members of employees will be invited to the factory to make assessment on the plant's efforts for safety, health and environmental activities.

Sponsoring "Opening up joyful world of chemicals," hosted by the Korea RC Council. To help children's understanding on the importance of chemicals and the industry as well as on chemical products, the Korea RC Council has been hosting a program where students from Yeosu, Ulsan and Daejeon areas participated in order to understand about the principles and importance of the role of chemicals. PolyMirae has been an active participant in such social outreach programs intended to restore trust in the chemical industry and to renew its positive awareness.
